The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday named Laura Dean Sykes to serve in her late husband's stead as District 4 supervisor until a special election can be held on Nov. 5.
Q.V. Sykes died July 14.
To the board's recollection, she is the third woman to serve on the board of supervisors and the third woman to be appointed after her husband's death in office.
Sykes was sworn in by Justice Court Judge Robbie M. Robertson. Sixteen people, mostly women, watched the brief ceremony.
When asked whether Sykes is ready for the job, District 5 Supervisor Ray Boswell said, "She'll have no problem. I think she'll do as good a job as any man."
District 2 Supervisor Jimmie Smith said he received phone calls from residents with ideas for a replacement, but that in Mississippi, the spouse is normally appointed.
Sykes said she has no intention of running for office in the November election, but that as supervisor, she would like to see positive attitudes prevail.
Sykes said she would also like to realize her husband's dream for a softball and baseball complex.
In other business, the supervisors:
Elected District 5 Supervisor Ray Boswell as vice president of the board;
Passed a resolution memorializing former District 4 Supervisor "Coach" Q.V. Sykes;
Passed a resolution in honor of James A. Stephens for 28 years of service to his country and his community;
Convened to act as the Lauderdale County Economic Development District and elected Ray Boswell as vice president; and
Called an executive session to discuss possible litigation and later declared that no action will be taken. Board Attorney Rick Barry excused himself from the discussion because of a possible conflict of interest.
