Meridian School Superintendent Janet McLin will receive a 5.8 percent pay raise this year part of the school district's $47 million budget the school board approved Monday.
McLin's pay will jump from $97,380 a year to $103,000 a year. The salary increase will be retroactive to July 1, the start of the school district's new fiscal year.
The school board approved the new budget unanimously and without discussion. School district Chief Fiscal Officer Suzanne Smith said the budget will be $119,000 less than last year's.
More than half of the $47 million budget, about $27 million, is earmarked for instruction a category that includes public school teacher salaries.
McLin said the school district is adding nine new teachers this year seven in kindergarten through third-grade and two in the fifth-grade.
The new budget will reduce the school district tax rate by .33 mills. But because of property reappraisal, it is too soon to tell whether the budget will decrease or increase property taxes.
The millage rate is the amount of tax paid per dollar on assessed value of property. One mill is one-tenth of a cent. For each mill, a taxpayer pays $1 for every $1,000 of assessed value.
Smith said she didn't hear anything from residents about the school district's budget.
