PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia American remained unblemished in the Dixie Youth Minor League (9-10 year olds) District 4 Tournament Tuesday night at Northside Park with a 6-3 win over West Lauderdale.
Tuesday's other game saw East Mississippi oust Choctaw from the tournament with a 20-1 drubbing in the losers' bracket.
After taking tonight off, play resumes Thursday with East Mississippi playing Philadelphia National in a 6 p.m. elimination game and Philadelphia American taking on Westside National of Philadelphia in a 7:30 p.m. winners' bracket contest.
Philly American 6
West Lauderdale 3
Philadelphia American jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and led 6-0 after two frames in staying in the winners' bracket.
After giving up six runs on five hits, three walks, and a hit batsman in the first two innings, West Lauderdale's Cain Mayatt did not allow another run the rest of the game as he handled all of the pitching chores for his team.
In taking the loss, Mayatt finished with five hits, five walks, and five strikeouts in five innings on the mound.
Philadelphia American pitched by committee with starter Caleb McKee getting the win. He allowed no runs on one hit and struck out four in two innings. Trey Hughes allowed two runs on three hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts in his two frames. Garrett Clark allowed one run (unearned) on one hit and two hit batsmen in his two innings.
The key stat for the trio was that they collectively allowed just one walk.
Austin Alderman led off the bottom of the first with a double for Philadelphia American and scored on a wild pitch. McKee walked and came home on a single by Hughes. Clark walked and scored on an error. Hughes got the fourth run when he crossed the plate on a single by Brandon Jones.
Philadelphia American went up 6-0 in the bottom of the second as Brandon Burton and Ryan Dove led off the inning with singles. Burton scored on a wild pitch and Dove came home on a fielder's choice by Warren Flake.
West Lauderdale got to within 6-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Parker Davis singled and Cory Goodman drew a one-out walk. Both scored on a single by Matthew Alawine.
West picked up its other run in the fifth as Mayatt reached on an error and scored on a ground out by Davis.
Both teams had five hits. Nate Hodges, Dylan Pedan, and Gary Thomas each added a single to West's total.
Both teams committed three errors.
East Mississippi 20
Choctaw 1
Stephen Connell, Dillon Boatner, and Hunter Graham combined on a three-hitter as East Mississippi eliminated Choctaw.
East Mississippi scored three times in the first, second, and third frames for an early 9-0 lead and then racked up 11 runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 20-0 advantage.
A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth plated Choctaw's only run.
Eleven of East Mississippi's batters had at least one hit as the winners had 17 hits and received six walks. Choctaw also committed 11 errors, while East Mississippi did not have a defensive miscue.
Boatner and Baly Hobson both had a single and a double for East Mississippi. Cory Bass, Kasey Hinton, Jonathan McMillan, and Hunter Potate each had a pair of singles with Connell, Kyle Koch, Maxwell Harmon, Tyler Sellers, and Tyler Lott each having one single.
Connell got the win, allowing no runs on two hits and a pair of walks in his two frames. He also had two strikeouts.
Cassius Lunderman had a single and a double for Choctaw. Josh Thomas had a double for his team's only other hit.
Brett Wishork took the loss.
