Golden Tigers’ long baseball winning streak comes to end with losses to Jets and Lions

The Russellville High School varsity baseball team is nearing the end of the regular season, and the Golden Tigers have Class 5A area games on the horizon. RHS is working to finish the year in a strong way, but recently dropped a couple of games to non-area opponents.
Russellville (19-9) hosted the James Clemens Jets April 1, and the Golden Tigers fell to the 7A team by a score of 7-4. The Jets flew to a 5-0 first inning lead and were ahead 7-0 after five innings of play. The Golden Tigers tried to rally against the Clemens’ bullpen, and RHS scored a run in the sixth inning and three in the seventh but failed to even the score or get the win late.
Eighth grader Brayden Entrekin hit a two-run home run for Russellville. Neyland Baker added two hits and one RBI. Brandt Cummings and Gunner Sappington also had RHS hits. Cummings and Baker had doubles, and the hit by Sappington was a single. Graves led James Clemens at the plate with two hits and two RBI.
Ty Engelthaler pitched 4.1 innings for Russellville and allowed seven runs but only three were earned. Entrekin worked 2.2 frames on the mound, allowing a hit and a walk. The Jets used four different pitchers during the contest.
Russellville traveled to Haleyville April 4 and dropped a game to the 4A Lions by a final score of 4-2.
The Golden Tigers fell behind 1-0 in the bottom half of the second inning but evened the score in the third on a single by Neyland Baker. HHS regained the lead and added to it with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Brandt Cummings had two hits for Russellville. He and Baker were joined in the hit column by Daniel Askew, Michael Scofield and Brodie Vandiver. Entrekin added the other RBI for the Golden Tigers. Cayden Johns, Tripp Cleveland and Entrekin all pitched for RHS.
The Russellville varsity baseball team hosted “Kids Night” April 1. Children were allowed to get in free for the game versus James Clemens and get a free hot dog. They also had the opportunity to take to the field for pregame warmups, starting lineup introductions and the national anthem.
