Local farmer’s markets to open next week

The local farmer’s markets are set to open next week in Russellville and Red Bay.

Franklin County Extension Agent Katernia Cole said her office has issued approximately 40 growers’ permits for the farmer’s markets.

“Last year we issued about 50,” Cole said. “This year, we’ve issued around 40 permits to growers.”

Cole said the permit allows the growers to sell their fruits and vegetables anywhere in the state for this year.

Cole said her office is encouraging consumers to buy their produce locally from local growers and for them to focus on nutritious eating this summer.

“This is the perfect time for our growers to showcase what they have, and the perfect time for non-growers to see what is available locally,” Cole said.

The Russellville farmer’s market will open June 2, and will be open every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 6 a.m. to noon, and the Red Bay farmer’s market will be open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday beginning June 1 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Russellville market is located downtown behind the A.W. Todd Centre, and the Red Bay market is located beside the family water park.

Red Bay Market Manager Melody Pearson said this will be the first full year with the Red Bay market, and she is expecting a good turn out as the crops begin to come it.

“At first, we only expect the early crops like potatoes, carrots, greens, and radishes,” Pearson said. “When the crops start coming in around the end of June is when we expect our biggest crowds of growers and buyers.”

Pearson said the farmer’s market was open briefly last year.

“We opened in August and was open for six weeks last year,” Pearson said. “It was sort of our trial run.”

Pearson said anyone interested in selling at the market should call 256-436-5345 or city hall at 356-4474.
