Meridian 12s add another state title

By By Jared Florreich / staff writer
July 16, 2003
Just like all the other teams from Meridian, the 12-year-old Cal Ripken All Star team won the state tournament in Orange Grove last weekend.
The squad defeated Orange Grove 5-0 in their tourney opener, Corinth 5-0 in game two, Vancleave 3-0, and Vicksburg twice, 4-2, and 2-1 to win the tourney.
Head coach Bubba Hannah said it was a total team effort.
Pitchers for the squad recorded 47 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched, and gave up only 12 hits and three runs.
Hannah said the team will focus on hitting in their upcoming practices.
The squad has played in regionals for the past two years. Hannah said that experience will help in their upcoming games.
With the tourney victory, the squad will make the nine and a half hour trek to Fort Smith, Ark. for Southwest Regional play July 31-August 5. They will see teams from Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma.
Their first game will be July 31 against Louisiana.
