McCorkle tabbed for UWA football job

LIVINGSTON, Ala. West Alabama head football Coach Randy Pippin announced today the hiring of Sam McCorkle to fill a spot on the 2003 UWA coaching staff vacated by Rip Flippo. McCorkle brings 30 years of coaching experience to Livingston and is a graduate of UWA.
He also spent six years as UWA's (then Livingston University) head coach from 1985-90. His new responsibilities will consist of coaching the outside linebackers, and assisting with recruiting and fund raising.
McCorkle spent the last three seasons as the head football coach at the University of Tennessee-Martin. He also has coaching experience at three Southeastern Conference schools. In 1982, he was tight ends coach at the University of Mississippi, before moving on to Vanderbilt University, where he spent two seasons. While at VU, he directed the offensive line in 1983 before moving to defensive line coach in 1984. McCorkle also spent the 1992 season as the recruiting coordinator for all sports at the University of Kentucky.
McCorkle, 53, received his Bachelor of Science in Education from UWA in 1973 and received his M.E. in Secondary Education from UWA a year later.
The Meridian native was the starting center on UWA's 1971 National Championship team. He is married to the former Diane Buchanan of Meridian. The two have one daughter, Laura and one son, Blaine.
