Head leads Rebels to victory

HOUSTON Stephen Head pitched a three-hitter and scored two runs as Ole Miss beat McNeese State 7-1 in an NCAA regional game Saturday.
The freshman left-hander pitched a complete game for Ole Miss (35-26), picking up his fourth win of the season. Head also led the way for the Rebels at the plate, going 3-for-5 and an RBI.
On the mound Head (4-1) recorded his second complete game of the season, while striking out seven and walking two.
Jacob Marceaux (2-4) was the loser, pitching seven innings and giving up four runs, two earned, on eight hits. He struck out six and walked one.
McNeese State, which ends its season at 31-30, took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Lance Dawkins, a former Meridian Community College standout, led off with a double and scored on a throwing error by catcher Charlie Waite.
Ole Miss made it 1-1 in the fourth when Head singled and scored when a single by Chad Sterbens rolled between the legs of centerfielder Dooley Prince for a two-base error.
Ole Miss (35-26) moved ahead 3-1 on a pair of sixth inning runs.
Seth Smith started the rally with a double and scored on a single by Head.
Head advanced to second when Sterbens reached on a throwing error by third baseman Tim Lemke. Brian Pettway drove in Head with a single.
The Rebels increased their lead to 4-1 in the seventh when Jonathan Swearingen hit his sixth homer of the season.
Ole Miss added three runs in the eighth on a two-run double by Dustin Cliburn, another former MCC standout, and an RBI single by Swearingen.
