Wayne County's football season is already off to a bad start as starting center Shane McCall has suffered a broken ankle.
The War Eagles open their season on Aug. 30 at Vicksburg when they take on the host Gators in the Red Carpet Bowl.

Oktibbeha welcomes Titans, Timberwolves
When the newly-created Ridgeland High School selected its mascot, much was made of the fact that the Madison County school would have the only Titans in Mississippi.
Not so fast. East Oktibbeha County, formerly known as B.L. Moor, also has the Titans as its mascot, replacing the Eagles that Moor used. The Titans will open their 2002 football season on Sept. 6 against French Camp under head coach Riley Murry.
On the other side of the county, West Oktibbeha County, the consolidation of Sturgis and Maben, has chosen the Timberwolves to be its mascot. The T'Wolves open their season on Aug. 30 at Caledonia under head coach Ken Williamson.
Sturgis' mascot was the Lions and Maben's was the Blue Devils.

Plummer now at MSU
Former Lamar School head football coach J.J. Plummer will be a defensive graduate assistant at Mississippi State this fall. While at Lamar, Plummer's teams went 4-7 in 1999 and 2-9 in 2000.

Loyd Star prepping for opener
Loyd Star first-year head football coach Sidney Wheatley has his 46-man roster busy in preparation for its season opener on Aug. 30 at Bay Springs.
Wheatley was formerly the head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Union before taking a similar position at Loyd Star last spring. He will be the head coach in both baseball and football this year for the Hornets.

Rain hampers Lawrence County
If taking on defending Class 3A state champion Collins wasn't tough enough for a season opener, the Lawrence County Cougars have been battling wet weather as well.
Afternoon showers have saturated the practice field at the Monticello school.

Starkville has 77 stingers out
The Starkville Yellowjackets have 77 players out for the 2002 football season for first-year head coach Ronnie Cuevas. The Jackets open on Aug. 30 at Louisville and will play at Meridian on Sept. 6.
All 11 starters on defense from the 2001 team will have to be replaced. Bidding for starting jobs are Derrick Outlaw (6-4, 270), Derrick Mason (6-5, 265), Robear Washington (6-3, 220), Terrell Spencer (6-0, 270), and Jeremy Williams (6-3, 305).
The Jackets home slate this fall includes games with West Point, Tupelo, Southaven, South Panola, Columbus, and Pensacola (Fla.) Tate.

Laurel just looking for win
Laurel second-year slow-pitch softball head coach Luke Leggett hopes to find the win column this fall after the Lady Tornadoes went 0-13 in 2001. Three starters return from that squad.
Laurel lost to Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday by the score of 19-0, while picking up just one hit.
