Meridian All-Stars begin play today in pre-majors tourney

The Meridian All-Stars will be counting on speed and teamwork when they begin play in the Dixie Pre-Majors State Tournament at Laurel's Wooten-Legion Field today.
Meridian opens play today at 5:30 p.m. in the eight-team double-elimination tournament against Moss Point.
Other teams in the tournament are Lawrence County, Tylertown, Cleveland, Carthage, Laurel-Jones County and Hattiesburg.
If Meridian wins today, it will play at 8 p.m. Sunday against the winner of the Saturday game between Hattiesburg and host Laurel-Jones County.
If Meridian loses today, then it will play the loser of the same game at 3 p.m.
The finals are set for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
On the mound Meridian will be counting on right-handers Jamie Fontan and Bo Davis and left-hander Kedrick Martin.
Daniel Boyd, Ryan Rollins and Randy Dively are also expected to see some action on the mound.
Davis leads Meridian at the plate, hitting a league-leading .767 during the regular season. The local team will also be counting on strong offensive output from Marcus Boyd, Justin Scott and Daniel Boyd.
Other players on the team are Lee Blackburn, Brandon Booker, Justin Gentry, Britt Harper, Blake Hedrick, Jason Pritchett and Dave Wood.
