Staranna Frazier, who has signed with Northeast Mississippi Community College, doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, then scored the winning run on a double by Mallory Sanford as New Albany defeated D'Iberville 7-6 in fast-pitch softball action. West Lauderdale fans might remember Frazier from March's Class 3A girls' state championship basketball game which New Albany won.

Michael Jacobs is in his fifth year of scoring results at the State Games. On Saturday, he recorded the results for track and field. Jacobs, 25, got involved with the State Games through Troy State University as a leadership scholar. Jacobs graduated in 2000 and he said he helped the coach at track events.

Sportsmanship is always a valuable part of every event in the State Games of Mississippi and this should always be practiced. After their 20-16 win over the Lady Hounds the NMO squad walked out to the middle of the field and showed great sportsmanship by giving the Lady Hounds a great cheer for winning the bronze medal. Even kids can appreciate the asportsmanship.

Herb Bennett is no stranger to competitive table tennis. Bennett has competed in USA Table Tennis Tournaments. He is a coach from the Hattiesburg area and after winning the gold in the men's senior division he took some time to give the younger players some pointers.

The Ocean Springs Lil Hounds and Biloxi 10-Under slow-pitch softball teams traveled to Meridian and met in the winners' bracket of their division with the Ocean Springs team taking a 12-9 victory. Proving that win was no fluke, the two met in the losers' bracket with the Lil Hounds racking up a 13-0 win. The Lil Hounds and Biloxi also met in the losers' bracket of the 8-Under coach-pitch tournament with the Lil Hounds taking a 15-4 win.

The commissioner of the track and field events, Wayne Williams, is also Southern Mississippi's track coach. Alongside him helping out in the events were members of his track team. In the youth's 4 x400 relay, a couple of them volunteered to race with the youth since they were the only team competing.

What do umpires do when they have a break during the State Games? In this case umpires at the slow-pitch tournament thought that napping during their off time was in order. Taking a nap during your break after a hot day of making the "right" calls is always well deserved.

The championship game of the Adult Men's Basketball featured at least five current college athletes. The Choctaw Warriors won the gold beating the Rams 73-63 in the finals. The Warriors were led by Jacksonville State signee James Denson. The Rams had Texas-San Antonio signees Robert Ivy and Sammie Cole. They also had Ole Miss football player Jeremy Ruffin.

Foul balls can be a very nasty situation in a baseball or softball event. In the slow-pitch softball tournament at Sammie Davidson Complex foul balls can be usual part of the game. Two straight foul balls reached the same part of the stands to make some people wonder if the wind plays a role.
