It took a total team effort in the fourth quarter, but the Meridian High Lady Wildcats stayed alive in the Class 5A South State playoffs by holding off a pesky Gulfport Lady Admiral squad at home, 67-57.
Richmond Alexander's squeeze bunt in the seventh brought home Tyler Singleton to lift the Meridian High Wildcats to a 4-3 victory over Northeast Jones in prep baseball action Monday in Laurel. Sanduan Dubose got the win by pitching the seventh and picking off a runner at third, but starter Jason Spinks had a no-hitter through five innings before NEJ tied it with a two-run frame.
PHILADELPHIA The Poplarville Lady Hornets brought a sparkling record, a quartet of six-footers and hopes of advancing in the MHSAA Class 3A girls' state basketball playoffs with them to the Pearl River Indian Reservation. It's a safe bet, however, that the Lady Hornets had not seen the pressure, nor the atmosphere that welcomed them at Choctaw Central Monday night. Choctaw heated up from behind the 3-point arc and blitzed Poplarville for 26 points in the third quarter on its way to an impressive 87-59 win over the Lady Hornets in front of a standing-room only crowd.

DECATUR The Belhaven Blazers kept sending batters to the plate, and East Central pitchers kept sitting them down. Seven Warrior pitchers combined to allow just three hits in Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader between East Central Community College and visiting Belhaven's junior varsity. East Central swept both games, winning the first game 10-0 in five innings and 7-0 in the nightcap.

CANTON For the Lamar Raiders, the first shot of Wednesday's Academy AA state tournament game would indeed be symbolic. Lee Laird was off balance when he threw one up from the free throw line. It bounced, rolled, settled and dropped much like the Raiders themselves. Lamar came out smoking in the first quarter of its 55-53 win over Brookhaven Academy, then bounced and rolled some, finally settled down in the last three minutes and then dropped the Cougars from title contention.

The Answer …
First baseman Will Clark and pitchers Jeff Brantley and Gene Morgan were named to the squad. Rafael Palmerio didn't make the team.
Sports Faces …
