Lady Warriors expect better year in 2002

Feb. 18, 2002
DECATUR A year ago, the East Central Community College Lady Warriors fast-pitch softball team was a lot like a Jerry Clower story.
Some of the players were playing in the first fast-pitch game they'd ever seen.
The Lady Warriors went 20-20 as they, along with the other MACJC members, retired the slow-pitch game in favor of fast-pitch.
Back on the mound is sophomore Emily Casey, who won 19 of ECCC's 20 games in 2001. Also slated to see time on the mound are April Bufkin and Jennie Battle. Both play in the outfield as well.
Bufkin was 23-3 as a senior at Newton County last spring.
Behind the plate for her second year is Sommer Averett, who was one of the top hitters a year ago.
Also returning is infielder Bernice Hannah.
Also on the 2002 roster is Jackie Denise Avant, a transfer from 2001 Region 23 Division I champion Meridian Community College. Avant is expected to start in the infield.
Other freshmen are outfielders Rhonda Munn, Frances McDougle, Krystal Moore, Paige Sullivan, and Brandi Upton. Rookie infielders include Faith Whitfield, Paige Posey, and Amanda Wilcher. Anna Moore will help with the catching chores.
The Lady Warriors will be seeking to dethrone defending Region 23 Division II champion Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the national tournament in Arizona last year.
The Lady Warriors open their season Tuesday at home against East Mississippi in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
