PHILADELPHIA Neshoba Central's 5-foot-1 senior guard Tausha Evans has impressed many basketball coaches throughout her career with her tremendous quickness. Evans scored 13 of her game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Rockets surprised third-ranked Meridian High 56-53.
Meridian wrapped up two division titles on a frigid field at Ray Stadium Tuesday night as both the boys' and girls' soccer teams claimed wins over Hattiesburg. The Lady Wildcats beat the visiting Lady Tigers 6-0 in the opener, while the Meridian boys won in a shootout 3-2.

COLLINSVILLE Matt Vaughn drilled a goal and dished out an assist as the West Lauderdale soccer team put a cap on its regular season with a 4-0 win Thursday night against Clarkdale. With the win, the Knights improve to 9-1 on the season and have a week to prepare for their first-round playoff match at home with Bay St. Louis Friday. Clarkdale ends its season at 5-8.
When things got tough on the inside, the Lamar School Lady Raiders turned to their perimeter shooters and the end result was an impressive 60-39 victory Thursday night over visiting Sylva-Bay Academy in their final home game of the season.

WAYNESBORO It was a wild night in Waynesboro at the opening round of the Sam Dale Conference tournament on Thursday, thanks in part mostly to Chris Stewart. Stewart and a group of ecstatic Lady Bulldogs from Enterprise came from behind to knock off Southeast Lauderdale, and advance to Friday's semifinals.
WEST POINT Mary Holmes College guard Roderick Stewart hit 22 of 26 free throws to spark his team to a 96-90 overtime victory over invading Meridian Community College here Thursday night. In the women's game, Barbara Bishop's Meridian team took a big step toward clinching the title of the conference, which now has only two teams, by racing to an 86-47 triumph.
SCOOBA East Mississippi Community College brought the brooms out of the closet Thursday night, sweeping a basketball doubleheader over Coahoma Community College. The Lions won 84-65 over the visiting Tigers and the Lady Lions were victorious by a score of 69-63.

At a baseball rules clinic meeting for prep baseball and softball, the East Mississippi Baseball Umpires Association, Al Yochim was named the umpire of the year.
He says being an umpire in Lauderdale County is special, too.
He'll be on the paths when the season starts on Feb. 15.
