An abandoned house at 3008 Interchange Road in Meridian burned for several hours Thursday as about 30 Meridian firefighters worked to control it.
Battalion Chief Tim Miller said dispatchers received a call about the fire at 12:48 p.m. Units from the fire department arrived on the scene within minutes.
Miller said the house hasn't had electricity since early October, and the mail hasn't been checked since Oct. 24.
The fire comes two days after the Meridian City Council approved an agreement for the Mississippi Army National Guard's 150th Combat Engineer Battalion to demolish 25 houses on the city's demolition list. This house, however, did not appear on the list.
Guard personnel will do the work for free. Don Farrar, Meridian's community development director, said the next step is to submit an official request with the Army National Guard. He said he doesn't know when the work will begin.
