YORK, Ala. Sumter Academy and Marengo are the only two high schools in west Alabama that are still competing in the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) playoffs.
Sumter opened the playoffs last week against 8-3 Chambers Academy.
Marengo and Sumter, both Class AA teams, will meet Friday at Sumter Academy at 7:30 p.m.
The two rival teams played early in the season, with Sumter Academy defeating Marengo 27-14.
Marengo is known for being a very effective throwing team, while Sumter is known for its passing defense.
Marengo is 8-3 for the season and has lost twice to larger schools. Sumter is 7-3 on the year and is lead by a strong group of seniors. "Every one needs to step up to the challenge and play to their full potential," Sanders said.
Both teams are reporting to the game healthy.
If the Eagles win against Marengo, they will play the winner of Wilcox and Springwood at Troy State University at 1 p.m. for the AA championship on Friday, Nov. 16.
Sumter Academy has never won a state championship.
