UWA rodeo men ranked No. 1 in nation
LIVINGSTON, Ala. With four rodeos complete, the UWA Wranglers have reached new heights as the number-one men's team in the nation. Along with the team achieving this goal, individuals are making their marks in the national poll as well. Jake Littlefield is currently in fifth place in the Men's All-around rankings and sixth in bull riding. Teammate Wilbur Durrance places eleventh in the Men's All-around and stands eighth in the calf roping event.
Wrangler Josh Hunt currently stands first in the entire nation in saddle bronc, while teammate Will Pearson has placed himself fourth in the steer wrestling competition. Scott Lee is currently 19th in the team-roping category to round out the Tigers in the national rankings.
Clarkdale takes two from Sebastopol
JorD'an Orr knocked down a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to hand the Lady Bulldogs of Clarkdale High School a 47-46 win over Sebastopol in girls basketball on Monday night.
Sebastopol lead at the end of each of the first three quarters before Clarkdale outscored the Lady Bobcats 19-13 in the final quarter to take the win.
Felicia Kirksey led Clarkdale with 13 points, while Orr his for 12. Ashley Johnson scored 17 for Sebastopol.
The Clarkdale boys put four players into double figures on the way to a thrilling 60-58 win. The Bulldogs trailed 39-37 after three quarters of play, but rallied to take the win.
Rocky Kirksey led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Matt Tucker scored 13 and Brandon Mabry and Bryant Gaddis scored 12 each. Sylvester Snow led Sebastopol with 30 points.
Winston wins, Central loses in tourney
The Lady Patriots of Winston Academy outscored Winona Christian 17-6 in the second quarter on the way to a 41-32 win in the first round of the East Holmes Academy Tournament on Monday night.
Katy Rose White led the 1-0 Lady Pats with 12 points.
In the Oak Hill Invitational in West Point, Central Academy of Macon fell behind by 20 points at the half on the way to a 64-34 defeat at the hands of host Oak Hill. Carrie Croker led Central with 11 points.
Newton County soccer teams drop two
Newton County High School opened its 2001-02 soccer season with a pair of losses on Monday.
The Cougars were defeated by West Jones 13-2, while the Lady Cougars dropped a 4-1 decision to the Lady Mustangs. No other details were available.
Jones Junior College splits with Holmes
ELLISVILLE The men's basketball team of Jones Junior College opened its season with a 71-61 win over visiting Holmes, after holding a 42-33 halftime lead.
The Lady Bobcats trailed Holmes by 11 at the half and went on to take a 79-69 loss. No other details were available.
MHS girls fair well in soccer scrimmages
The Lady Wildcats of Meridian High School beat Northeast Lauderdale 2-0, tied Tupelo 1-1, beat Colubus 3-0 and lost to Clinton 1-0 in their own preseason soccer event on Saturday.
Meridian opens its regular season today at 5:30 p.m. when the Lady Wildcats travel to Starkville.
MHS is at Oak Grove on Thursday before returning home to host Pearl at the Jaycess Soccer Complex Saturday at noon.
