City council members on Tuesday accepted The Meridian Star's proposal to purchase a new telephone for the Meridian Police Department.
Publisher Paul Barrett offered to furnish the phone when he learned the multi-line unit in the office of Capt. Betty Evans is broken and beyond repair, and no money is available in the city's budget to replace it. Evans, who heads the department's Criminal Investigations Division, is forced to find a desk or office other than her own to conduct official police business over the telephone.
The proposal was approved unanimously by the council at its meeting Tuesday night.
The new phone is expected to cost about $200.
