When Monique Horner hung up her Southeast Lauderdale basketball uniform for the last time following the 81-77 win over South Pontotoc for the Class 3A state championship on March 9, she had gotten about all she could have from a high school career that actually began for her in the seventh grade.
Horner finished as Mississippi's all-time career scoring leader with 4,853 points, including a 36.2 average her senior year as Southeast went 32-8.
Horner, who signed with Meridian Community College, also averaged 10 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals this year.
For that, Horner has been selected The Meridian Star's Girls' Basketball Player of the Year.
Horner had a career-high of 64 points against Clarkdale in December. She also hit a state season record 185 3-pointers and tallied a state-best 1,449 points in her final year.
Of all Horner's numbers, perhaps the most impressive is her 44 point average in four games with Choctaw Central this year.
Selected as co-Coaches of the Year are Miller, who led a Southeast team that had only one senior Horner to the 3A state crown, and Bill Ingersoll, who led Lake's Lady Hornets to the Class 1A state championship and a 34-3 final record.
Ingersoll also had only one senior on his team.

senior Cantea Brown (16 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 3 blocks, Mississippi-Alabama Game) and senior Kanecia Williams (17 ppg, 11.5 rpg, North-South Game) of Class 5A state runner-up Meridian, 32-5;
senior Melinda Ben (14.8 ppg, 11.7 rpg) and senior Crystal Lewis (16.4 ppg, 5.4 assists) of Class 3A state semifinalist Choctaw Central, 31-5;
senior Tausha Evans (24.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.0 assists, 3.3 steals, 74.9 percent free-throw shooter, Mississippi-Alabama Game) of Class 4A state semifinalist Neshoba Central, 28-11;
senior Tamekia Foley (25 ppg, 8 rpg, 3 steals, 3 assists, North-South Game) of Newton County, 27-5;
senior Dorecious Powe (16 ppg, 15 rpg) of Northeast Lauderdale, 22-11;
sophomore Erlexis Cooper (17 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 2.6 steals, 1.3 blocks) of Noxubee County, 30-7;
junior Britney Burks (25 ppg, 5 rpg) of Scott Central, 24-11;
and senior Julie McCrory (10.2 ppg, 4 assists) of West Lauderdale, 21-10.
