Meridian youth baseball teams continue to post state tourney victories

The Meridian Dixie Majors remained undefeated in state tournament action after defeating Benton 4-2 Tuesday night in Taylorsville.
Ryan Clay was the winning hurler in going the distance on the mound. Clay fanned seven batters, allowed five hits and walked two.
Brad McKey had a pair of singles and two runs scored, while Phillip Garrett doubled and scored a run. Ty Harbor also doubled and Mann Dubose added a single and a run.
Meridian continues action tonight at 8 p.m. when they face Laurel/Jones County.
In Laurel, Meridian continued to roll through the Dixie Pre-Majors State Tournament in Laurel, blanking their third consecutive opponent Monday.
Behind the stellar pitching of Jamie Fontan, Meridian shutout Carthage 8-0 to advance to a winner's bracket showdown with Laurel-Jones County Tuesday night.
Fontan needed just 67 pitches in tossing the two-hit shutout, facing just 23 batters in going the distance. He gave up consecutive singles in the fourth frame.
Meridian took advantage of four Carthage errors to plate three runs in the top half of the fifth inning. Tyler Singleton had a sacrifice fly, followed by RBI-singles from Bo Davis and Richie McAlister.
Tyler Maxwell added a run-scoring double in the sixth. Meridian got some insurance runs in the seventh, thanks to key hits from Davis, Ike Munn, John Iverson and Andy Slayton.
In their first three tournament games, Meridian has outscored the opposition 30-0, while surrendering just seven hits in 17 innings.
In Oxford, Meridian American's 12-year-old All-Stars claimed the Cal Ripken State Championship Monday night. Scoring details, however, were not available at presstime.
