For the second consecutive year, The Meridian Star has taken top honors for "Best Special Section" in the Mississippi Press Association's annual Better Newspaper Contest.
The Meridian Star also took the first-place award for "Best Special Section" last year, for a four-part series in honor of the new millennium.
The newspaper won honorable mentions in the "Best Editorial" and "Best General News Story" categories.
Editor Buddy Bynum earned an honorable mention for a series of editorials in October and November addressing the state flag debate, guns in schools and the mayor's "pay to stay" incentive plan. The last of those editorials was headlined, "Ill wind wafting toward city hall."
Reporter Marianne Todd and former staff writer Sharon White won an honorable mention for coverage of the tornado that struck northern Lauderdale County in December.
