NMO takes gold in 10-under competition

North Meridian Optimist defeated Diamond Girls 21-20 in the championship game of the 10-under division of the State Games of Mississippi slow-pitch softball tournament Saturday at Northeast Park.
NMO went 4-0 in the double-elimination tournament to secure the gold medal.
Diamond Girls took the silver medal with Lady Choctaws claiming the bronze. Eight teams participated in the division.
NMO 21, Diamond Girls 20: North Meridian erupted for 14 runs in the third inning to beat Diamond Girls in the championship contest.
Jessica Frazier had three hits to lead NMO.
Diamond Girls 18, West Lauderdale 2: The Diamond Girls got eight runs in the first inning and added seven more in the third in beating West Lauderdale.
West Lauderdale had four hits. Beth Page had a triple and Emily Walker had a double.
Chelsea Pugh had two homers and a single for the Diamond Girls. Sommer Robinson added two singles.
Lady Choctaws 16, Biloxi 4: The Lady Choctaws tallied eight times in the fifth inning in beating Biloxi.
Beth Frazier had three singles for the Lady Choctaws. Tiffani Briscoe had a single and a triple. Mercedes Cotton had two singles. Ellagene Sam had a double.
Biloxi had four hits, all of which were singles.
JLady Choctaws 24, Corinth 6: Lady Choctaws racked up seven runs in the first inning and added eight in the third and seven more in the fourth in trouncing Corinth.
The Lady Choctaws got two singles and a homer from Tiffani Briscoe, a single, a double, and a triple from Ellagene Sam, a single and a triple from Mercedes Cotton, two singles from Beth Frazier, and a double from Samilia Isaac.
Corinth had seven hits with Taylor Weaver leading the way with a triple.
NMO 19, St. Martin 2: A nine-run second inning carried North Meridian past St. Martin.
Mindi Turnipseed had two home runs and a double to lead NMO. Sarah Beckham had two singles and a double, while Mallory Pace had two singles.
NMO 10, Diamond Girls 5: North Meridian struck for four runs in the first inning and never trailed.
Mindi Turnipseed had three hits including two home runs to lead NMO. Lindsay Long had three hits including one homer. Laci Maxwell added two singles, while Kayla Boutwell had a double.
Brittany Cochran and Chelsea Pugh each had two hits for Diamond Girls.
West Lauderdale 18, St. Martin 8: West Lauderdale sent St. Martin packing with the 10-run win.
Sydney Cagle had two singles to lead West Lauderdale. Beth Page added a triple.
NMO 14, Lady Choctaws 11: NMO rallied from an 11-7 deficit with seven runs in the fifth inning to defeat Lady Choctaws in the winners' bracket game final.
Lanie Simcox had two singles and a triple for NMO. Sarah Beckham had three singles. Kayla Boutwell, Kristen Covington, and Brittany Jackson had two singles apiece.
The Lady Choctaws got two singles apiece from Ellagene Sam and Tiffany Briscoe.
West Lauderdale 9, Corinth 3: A four-run second inning carried West Lauderdale past Corinth in the elimination contest.
Sydney Cagle had a single and a homer for West Lauderdale. Emily Walker added a single and a double.
Diamond Girls 24, West Lauderdale 2: Diamond Girls shelled West Lauderdale for 11 runs in the second inning in taking the elimination contest win.
West Lauderdale managed only three hits in the loss.
Brittney Cochran had three hits to lead Diamond Girls.
Diamond Girls 16, Lady Choctaws 11: A five-run fourth inning carried Diamond Girls past Lady Choctaws in the third-place game.
Beth Frazier had three hits for Lady Choctaws. Tiffani Briscoe, Kiacia Wallace, Thomasina Lindsey, and Mercedes Cotton each had two hits.
Whitney Shumack had three hits for Diamond Girls, while Chelsea Pugh had two hits.
In other games, Corinth defeated Young Sales Bulldogs 7-4, Biloxi eliminated Young Sales Bulldogs 19-11, and Diamond Girls ousted Biloxi 29-3.
