Ham operators hold field day
Meridian Amateur Radio operators hope to contact thousands of other hams throughout North America in the nation's largest ham radio on-air event, "Field Day," to be held June 23-24 at Bonita Lakes Pavilion #2.
The 24-hour exercise starts at noon on June 23.
Licensed amateur radio operators in Lauderdale and Clarke counties and anyone wanting to learn about this important means of emergency communications are invited to attend. Field Day is a competition as well as a "trial run" for emergency communication skills used during disaster situations.

Partnership focuses attention on fathers
Partnership for Health Lauderdale County will host an education day Friday for fathers who want to make their homes tobacco-free.
The Tobacco-Free Homes Campaign will reward fathers who take the pledge with a unique item for household use. Information about how to create tobacco-free homes will be available Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The office is located at 806 Highway 19 North, Suite 385, in the College Park Shopping Center.

Saturday is Garden Day at Merrehope
Merrehope volunteers will hold a garden work day Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon. Volunteers from Naval Air Station Meridian will also be helping to lay brick edging around the Polly Cameron Garden.
In January 1999, East Mississippi Master Gardeners and Merrehope joined in a three-year agreement allowing master gardeners to work the gardens of Merrehope recognizing the need for a public garden in the city of Meridian and fulfilling the MSU Extension Service vision of educating the general public.

VFW Post #3996 hosts fish fry
Frank Foster VFW Post #3996 will host a charity fish fry Saturday at 10 a.m. on the patio of the Kendallwood Craft Building in Highland Park. The building is located next to the Dentzel Carousel. Sandwiches will be on sale for $2. Meals with hush puppies, french fries and cole slaw are $3.50.
Relay hosts blood drive
The first annual "Relay for Life" blood drive will be held Monday from 1 p.m.-8 p.m., in the Temple Theatre Ballroom. Members of Relay for Life teams will recruit blood donors to help assure there will be blood for cancer patients when it is needed.
Donors will receive a T-shirt and the team that recruits the most donors will receive a plaque. The public is urged to attend.
Silver Leaf to hold open house
Silver Leaf Manor will hold an open house June 21 from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. The event is an opportunity for the Meridian community to tour Silver Leaf and ask questions. There will be fun, food and give-away prizes, including a free night's stay at the Beau Rivage Casino located in Biloxi. For information, call Elizabeth Bridwell at 483-4566.
Cruisin' event set for Father's Day
Vintage Wheels Club and Hemmings Motor News will host a Father's Day road cruise Sunday with the theme "The Old Man and His Old Car." The event is open to people who own pre-1970 cars. There is no entrance fee and prizes will be awarded.
The event begins at 1 p.m. at Queen City Nursing Center, 1201 28th Ave. The cars will next be at Silver Leaf Manor, 4555 35th Ave., at 2:30 p.m. The caravan then travels to Beverly Healthcare in Broadmoor, 4728 Highway 39 North, at 4 p.m.
The public is invited to attend all stops.
Seniors invited to public hearing
The East Central Planning and Development District/ Area Agency on Aging will hold a public hearing about aging programs June 28, at 10 a.m., in the auditorium of the Newton City Hall.
The purpose of this hearing is to inform people about senior programs and services available in Clarke, Jasper, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Smith counties. The goals and objectives for fiscal year 2002 will be discussed and an update of current activities will be presented.
