Smith signs with EMCC soccer team
Drew Smith, a 2001 graduate of Northeast Lauderdale, recently signed a soccer scholarship with East Mississippi Community College.
Smith played forward and goalie for the Trojans.
Stevens ties for 37th in tourney
Decatur native Jeremy Stevens tied for 37th place in the NJCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship at Chautauqua, N.Y., last week.
The East Central Community College freshman opened play with an 81 on Tuesday. He then shot an 80 on Wednesday, a 77 on Thursday, and a 78 on Friday to finish the 72-hole event at 316.
Joe Saver of Central Lakes College won the individual portion of the tournament with a 291.
Mississippi's lowest score was a 307 by Copiah-Lincoln's John Carlton.
Adam Napier of Jones shot a 344.
Rock Valley College won the team championship with a combined score of 1,219.
Mets to hold tryout at MCC
The New York Mets will conduct a tryout camp at Meridian Community College in Meridian on
Tuesday. Starting time for the camp will be 9 a.m.
All players between the age of 16 to 21 years old are invited to attend the camp. The Mets are particularly interested in upcoming juniors for the 2002 season, who may also tryout for the Mets team in the East Coast Professional Baseball Showcase, which will be held at the
University of North Carolina-Wilmington in early August. Several roster spots remain open for the team.
All players must wear a uniform, including glove, spikes, and personal gear. All other equipment will be provided for the camp.
American Legion players must have written permission from their coach to participate in the workout. Players may not participate if they have been selected in the 2001 Baseball Draft.
The camp will be under the direction of Bob Rossi, Scouting Supervisor for the Mets.

MCC softball signs Clarkdale standouts
Meridian Community College's Lady Eagle softball team has added two players to its roster from Clarkdale for the 2001-2002 season.
Both are graduates of Clarkdale High School and were coached by Rick Roberson.
Stamm was a three-sport participant at Clarkdale and has started at shortstop for coach Roberson since the 1997 season.
Wright was also a three-sport player at Clarkdale and has started in the outfield for coach Roberson the past four seasons. She finished the 2000 season with a .768 on base percentage and a batting average of .379. She has led the team in stolen bases for the past four years.
Lightening turns in good year
`Lightening of the Meridian Youth Soccer Organization's 14-Under League turned in a 9-6-2 record this year. The season was highlighted by a third-place finish in the district.
Lightening took first place in Meridian and third place in the district which was played in Brandon and Northeast Jackson.
Team members are Katie Lewis, Mary Thornton, Victoria Meek, Dana Duckworth, Ivy Rawson, Michelle Stallworth, Sarah Fowler, Tiffany Hickman, Emmy Joyner, Erin Ware, Vanessa Hamilton, Alex Dukes, Rachel Savoy, Elizabeth Bowen, Ashley Jordan, and Tonisha Giles.
Most of these girls, joining the other MYSO team, will be competing in the State Games with Lewis being the head coach and Duckworth and John Lisenbe assisting.
