QUITMAN "Many a soldier has died for this country. You are free today because they gave their lives for us."
With that, Ann McKenzie set the mood for Monday's Memorial Day Service at the Clarke County Courthouse. Sponsored by VFW Post #4982 and the Ladies Auxiliary, the service honored those who have died defending freedom.
More than 100 people attended the annual ceremony. The program started with the posting of the colors by Billy Kemp and Pete Davis.
Most moving was the roll call of the names of the war dead from Clarke County, read by Brenda Kufel and Vallie Molony. After the program, there was a 21-gun salute by the VFW Post #4982 rifle team, and the flag was lowered to half-staff.
