Clarkdale classrooms caught in cash crunch

The Lauderdale County School Board voted Monday to delay bids for a new math/science building for Clarkdale Attendance Center.
A special school board meeting was called to hear the presentation of the Clarkdale project by Brad Carter of Carter Miller Associates of Meridian. The proposed center would consist of six new classrooms, two labs for chemistry and a general science lab. It is part of a 10-20 year master plan for Clarkdale, Superintendent David Little said.
The board voted to delay bids on the new building until Sept. 7 in order to take budget cuts into consideration. The new building would be funded by 16th Section funds.
The school district is looking at a 1 percent loss of funding, or $216,943, right now but the cuts could range up to 5 percent. District officials are preparing by not filling open teaching positions at this time.
Board members are apprehensive about making any final decisions about spending until they know the what the budget cuts will be.
