Red Cross hopes to attract new executive director

American Red Cross officials in Meridian are working hard on fund-raising, and keeping their fingers crossed that enough money will be raised this month to entice a new executive director.
In the meantime, board members and volunteers including former executive director Brad Steely are wrapping up a month's worth of fund-raisers with a barbecue pork sale Friday beginning at noon.
The barbecue plates are being catered by Squealer's, and deliveries will be made for any size purchase, Steely said.
The United Way agency is also awaiting pledges from its mailing campaign, which will draw to a close March 31. Potuk said a search will begin for Steely's replace after the agency's regular monthly meeting April 26.
Since resigning March 16, Steely has been returning to Meridian on weekends to help with paperwork and budgeting. He left Meridian after a year with the Red Cross to accept a civil service position in New Orleans. He had retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years.
