HATTIESBURG Toby Barker of Meridian, a freshman at the University of Southern Mississippi, has been elected vice president of the Student Government Association in a run-off victory.
Barker's issues include insufficient student parking, dorm improvements, a new fax system and a system to put teacher evaluations on the Internet. He said he would also like to increase voter turnout on campus.
His duties as vice president include presiding over the Senate, overseeing meetings and filling in when the president is unavailable.
Barker has student government experience in his background. He was vice president and president of his class while attending Kate Griffin Junior High School.
He is a pre-engineering major taking Chemistry I, English II, Physics, Calculus II and Vector Statistics this semester. He aspires to be a civil engineer.
Barker is the son of Robert and Cindy Barker of Meridian.
