Newton County jail modifies meal plans

DECATUR Meal plans at the Newton County jail are being modified after inspectors from the Mississippi State Cooperative Extension Service deemed them "unacceptable" during a recent review.
MSU Extension Service officials evaluate the meals periodically at the request of the Newton County Board of Supervisors.
James Smith, board president, said the problem is minor and the evaluation did not result from complaints by prisoners.
Cooks at Colley's in Union have been preparing the meals since the first of the year. Smith said the contract is awarded annually.
Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight said inmates haven't complained.
A spokesperson at the Extension Service said home economist Susan Cosgrove evaluates the meals.
