Burns: Meridian key' in state development plans

Meridian is a "key element" in the state's economic development planning, the executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority said today.
Burns spoke this morning to the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation's Business Before Hours Breakfast.
Despite what may have been the perception of area lawmakers and leaders that Meridian was ignored for some time by state leaders, Burns said the city has been in its plans and will continue to be a crucial part of the planning process.
He said recent development-type activities in Meridian are a good indication of the future.
Burns pointed out the upcoming revitalization of The Grand Opera House and development of the Hope for Children Foundation as just two examples of achievements.
According to Burns, Meridian and the surrounding area may be able to attract automotive suppliers expected in Mississippi as the new Nissan truck manufacturing plant is built in Madison County.
With the city's location on major interstate highways, Burns said Meridian also should be in a prime position to compete for other sectors of the automotive supplier industry.
