Mail carrier presses assault charge

A rural mail carrier has pressed charges against a Lauderdale County man after he allegedly slapped her across the chest with a letter he said she delivered to the wrong address.
Tammy Parker told authorities she was making her daily deliveries Tuesday when she dropped off mail to a house in the Villa Plantation subdivision, off Cotton Gin Road in the Topton community.
County arrest reports show Thomas, 22, was later picked up by Lauderdale County sheriff's deputies and charged with simple assault.
Weisend said the charge against Thomas is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine, if handled by the state. However, assault on a postal employee is a federal crime and can be prosecuted on the federal level with a possible prison sentence of five years and a $250,000 fine.
Weisend was the investigator in the federal investigation involving the Oct. 3 death of rural postal carrier Brenda Rogers in Kemper County.
