Meridian contractor Donnie Massey hopes to use his new position as president of the Home Builders Association of Mississippi to build a stronger foundation for the industry.
Massey was elected in November to head the 3,000-member organization.
Active in HBAM since 1993 and part owner of D and H Construction and Cabinetry for the last 15 years, Massey's main duties as president will be to handle the everyday business of the organization and to conduct board meetings.
Although Massey describes many of his duties as "routine" HBAM will have an interest in certain legislation when the 2001 legislative sessions opens in January.
Two particular legislative issues are expected to attract the HBAM's attention. One would require home inspectors to be certified and the other would help ensure monies given to cities by developers and earmarked for expansion of city services is used properly.
Massey said unlicensed home inspectors have become problematic in the industry and a statewide standard could more clearly define inspectors' roles.
Massey said HBAM is also interested in making sure that so-called "impact fees" paid by developers to local governments are used for their intended purposes  including curbs and gutters, streets and expansion of fire protection.
In addition to lobbying state lawmakers Massey also will be representing the state at the National Home Builders Association convention in February held in Washington, D.C.
Massey officially takes his new post in January.
