Kemper County election… Watkins wins run-off race for election commissioner

By By Sheila Blackmon/The Meridian Star
DEKALB Americans may still be waiting for the Florida Supreme Court to help determine who the nation's next president will be, but Kemper County voters are more decisive. District 2 voters elected Shirlean "Dee" Watkins Tuesday to serve as their next election commissioner.
Watkins and JoAnn Scott tied in the Nov. 7 election with 430 votes each.
In Tuesday's run-off, Watkins received 266 votes to Scott's 131.
Early Tuesday afternoon, Allen said with only five precincts involved, a low turnout was expected.
After a full final day, Watkins was at the courthouse to hear the results.
Scott said she and Watkins met at the courthouse after the Nov. 7 election.
District 2, in the southwest part of the county, includes the Porterville area and ends just south of Scooba. Watkins will take office in January, after Revis Burton completes his second term.
