Phil Campbell’s season ends with round one loss to J.B. Pennington

The Phil Campbell Bobcats were able to host their first playoff game in 20 years Friday night. The fan base showed up loud and dressed for a “White Out.” In the end, the defense of J.B. Pennington snuffed out the Bobcats’ hopes of a playoff run, winning 10-7, allowing Phil Campbell one score in the waning seconds of the game.

“Obviously it is disappointing to lose,” said Phil Campbell Coach Kevin Barnwell. “We just were not able to make enough plays against their defense, and they made just enough against us.

“I am extremely proud of our players and the way they prepared and played. I am also proud of our students and our fans. They really came out strong to support us tonight.”

Phil Campbell’s defense was just as stifling, allowing just one touchdown late in the first quarter and an early fourthquarter field goal.

Pennington scored its lone touchdown with 3:08 to go in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead. After that it was a defensive stalemate that lasted through the second and third quarters.

Pennington scored again with 11:11 to go in the fourth quarter on a 31-yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead.

The Bobcats finally were able to cross the goal line with 46 seconds left in the game on a 3-yard pass from Kyle Pace to Bryant Hyde. Pace also kicked the point after, making the score 10-7.

Jett Traywick and Braxton Goodson led the defense with eight tackles each.

Phil Campbell’s season ends with a 7-4 record.
