Meridian-based Rush Health Systems has reached an agreement in principle to buy Laird Hospital in Union.
Rush spokesman Donnie Smith said today the health system's board approved the venture last week and that a letter of intent detailing the deal is expected to be signed in the next few days. If all goes as expected, Rush would assume ownership of Laird Hospital, a 50-bed acute care facility that has 100-plus employees.
Laird Hospital primarily serves residents in the area of Union, a town of about 2,000 residents that sits virtually astride the Newton and Neshoba county lines.
Laird also holds a certificate of need to build a 60-bed nursing home, a project officials said is expected to proceed when the purchase is finalized.
