    Lady Cougars take tough win over Union

    Newton County's Lady Cougars all but sewed up a playoff berth with a 4-2 fast-pitch softball win over Union Saturday afternoon at Decatur.
    Newton County improved to 23-2 overall and 10-0 in league play. Union fell to 19-3 and 10-3.
    Newton County got two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Shelly Ferguson singled and was driven in by Krissi Harris. Shanna Jones scored the second run on a passed ball.
    In the third frame, Dominique Mapp singled and April Bufkin was hit by a pitch. Ferguson then singled home Mapp to put the Lady Cougars up 3-0.
    The Lady Cougars added another run in the fifth as Bufkin walked with courtesy runner Holly Jackson scoring on an error on Suzanne Chaney's at-bat.
    Union got both of its runs in the top of the seventh. Marley Smith led off with a walk and scored on a triple by Lauren White. White scored on an error on LaSaundra Harrison's at-bat.
    Ferguson had two singles to lead the Lady Cougar offense.
    Bufkin (15-1) got the win, while Smith (11-2) took the loss.
    Newton County will have a busy week as the Lady Cougars will travel to Clarkdale for a 7 p.m. game on Monday before hosting Clarkdale at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Wednesday finds Newton County hosting Choctaw Central. On Thursday, the Lady Cougars host Noxapater in a doubleheader. On Friday, Newton County plays at Enterprise at 1 p.m. before hosting Clinton at 6.
    Philadelphia 11, Choctaw Central 1: The Lady Tornadoes improved to 10-5 with the division win.
    Jenny Battle (8-5) was the winning pitcher.
    Slow-pitch
    Leake Academy 19, Kemper Academy 3: The Lady Rebels struck for eight runs in the first inning and added six more in the second in taking the four-inning win at DeKalb.
    Kelly Cumberland had two singles and a three-run homer for Leake, 14-0. Anna Lisa Posey had two singles and a triple to drive in a pair of runs. Ashton Agent had two singles and a homer to drive in two runs. Megan McNeil had three singles and three RBIs. Anya Dickerson had two singles and three RBIs. Traci Harrell had a two-run single.
    Kristen Chipley (14-0) was the winning pitcher.
    Jennifer Knox had a triple for Kemper, while Kayla Mosley and Amanda Hall both had a double.
    Leake will host Jackson Academy Monday afternoon in Madden.
