MCC adds women's soccer; eliminates track and field

Aug. 16, 2001
Meridian Community College will add women's soccer to its athletic program, while terminating its track and field program.
Elliott said that expenses for the upkeep of the track and a lack of participation in the women's track program were also considered. These decisions were approved by the MCC Board of Trustees during their Tuesday meeting.
Elliott also announced that MCC men's soccer coach Steve Clements will also coach the women's team.
Clements, who was named the NJCAA National Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to the national championship in 2000, will retain his position as men's soccer coach as well.
He will be busy recruiting MCC's first female team during the 2001-2002 school year. The Lady Eagles will play their first match in the fall of 2002 when MCC officially begins its reaffiliation with the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Athletic Conference.
Clements said he was excited about this opportunity.
MCC track coach Ley Fletcher has accepted a position at a four-year college in South Carolina.
