The staff at the Academic Advising Center at Mississippi State University-Meridian wants to cut down on the wear and tear on shoe leather for students and save time, too.
The center, located in the admissions and student services suite, opened in September and functions as a central location to answer questions.
Regena Clark, the center's coordinator and Carol Lawson, academic adviser, staff the office.
As a junior, senior and master-level university, MSU-Meridian's students have completed their first two years of college elsewhere. At the center, potential transfer students can have their transcripts evaluated, get answers about financial aid, discuss goals, find out exactly what programs are available and receive advice in all areas before following through with a formal application to the university. Students can pay fees at the center as well.
The center can benefit people who have had a break in their education and want to return to classes. Advisory sessions vary in length depending on the student. Clark said most will not take more than an hour.
There was some waiting when the center opened last fall.
Dr. Bev. R. Norment, dean of MSU-Meridian Campus, said the center was established to give accurate advice and information on the front end.
