STARKVILLE Mississippi State head football coach Jackie Sherrill has been looking for playmakers in this season of frustration.
One player he can always count on is linebacker Mario Haggan.
However, there is a possibility that Sherrill may not have his senior standout on defense when the Bulldogs play against Arkansas Saturday. Haggan, the leading tackler for Mississippi State with 114, suffered an ankle injury late against Tennessee and Sherrill said his status is uncertain during Tuesday's press conference.
Haggan doesn't want to spend his last game at Scott Field on the sideline.
Freshman Marvin Byrdsong, brother of former MSU defensive back Shawn Byrdsong, will get the start if Haggan can't play. Even though Sherrill said missing Haggan won't change the way the Bulldogs play defense, there will be an impact.
The potential loss of defensive lineman Tommy Kelly could also hurt that chemistry. The junior also hurt his ankle against the Vols and is listed as doubtful.
Sherrill hopes that fullback Darnell Jones (ribs) and quarterback Kevin Fant (shoulder and ankle) will be able available against the Razorbacks.
Sherrill realizes the importance of the final home game, especially to the eight senior starters.
