PHIL CAMPBELL – The Red Bay varsity boys stunned Phil Campbell 50-48 Saturday night in the finals of the Franklin County tournament
Grant Fancher tipped in a Pablo Makepeace 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Red Bay its second straight county title. The Tigers also beat Phil Campbell in last year's finals, but this time around the Bobcats, the 2006 county champions, seemed in complete control with a dominant first half and a 13-point halftime advantage.
But Phil Campbell, which shot 50 percent from field-goal (12-of-24) and 3-point (4-of-8) range in the first half, struggled offensively in the second half as Red Bay held the Bobcats to only 15 second-half points.
Red Bay used a 13-2 third quarter keyed by two treys from Derrick Miller and six points by Justin Page to cut Phil Campbell's lead to 35-33 entering the final period.
In the fourth, Miller hit a jumper to put Red Bay ahead 48-46, but Adam Mitchell fed Tanner Maddox to tie the game at 48 before Fancher won it for the Tigers.
Miller scored 17 for Red Bay, while Page had 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds and Fancher added 11 points and six rebounds.
Maddox paced Phil Campbell with 15 points and six rebounds, while Jonathon Dill added eight points and Tate Canida finished with seven.
