RMS girls basketball begins with wins

The Russellville Middle School girls’ basketball team is off to a winning start for the 2023-2024 season.

The RMS girls, led by head coach Angela Woods, has a 7-1 record after recent victories over Haleyville and Red Bay.

On Nov. 6, the Russellville Golden Tigers defeated the Haleyville Lions by a 48-20 final score. RMS jumped out to an 18-8 first quarter lead and held a 24-12 advantage at the halftime break. Russellville played a strong third quarter, outscoring Haleyville 14-3 during the period to put the game out of reach.

Sadie Odom led Russellville in scoring with 15 points. Bella Malone also finished the game in double-figures with 12. Blevyn Sappington added seven points, Hayleigh Chaney scored six and Lourdes Ellis had four while Kyla Francisco and Aleya Lane had two points apiece.

The RMS girls kept to their winning ways the following evening by defeating the Red Bay Tigers with a score of 35-11.

Russellville outscored Red Bay 16-2 in the first quarter and 4-0 in the second to earn a 20-2 lead at the half. RMS grew the advantage to 30-6 at the end of three quarters of play with a 10-4 period.

Sadie Odom again led Russellville in scoring this time with eight points. Blevyn Sappington and Bella Malone had six points each and they were followed in the scoring column by Chaney with five points and Lourdes Ellis with four. Lilly Hood and Lane were next with two points apiece while Francisco and Collins Odom had one point each.
