Waterloo battle ends in Vina defeat
By Bart Moss for the FCT
Blake Hardin completed two touchdowns and ran for another touchdown in a 42-22 loss to region foe Waterloo Friday night.
Vina coach Jason Harris was able to find some silver linings in what was otherwise a cloudy night for his Red Devil team.
“We play a two-quarterback system with Blake Hardin and Austin Harper,” explained Harris. “They both played well in the second half. I was really proud of the way they kept fighting.
“Our defense didn’t quit. They stiffened up in the second half and created some opportunities for us. In the end, we just shot ourselves in the foot too much. We have to stop that.”
The Waterloo Cougars scored six straight touchdowns to build a 42-0 lead before the Red Devils could get on the scoreboard.
Hardin completed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Landers for Vina’s first score late in the game. Hardin scored on a 4-yard run for the Red Devils second touchdown. Vina’s final touchdown came on an 18-yard completions to Harper.
Vina falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in their region. The Red Devils will travel to Phillips Friday night in another region matchup.
