Tharptown comes back to beat Phillips

The Tharptown Wildcats used a strong run game to come from behind to beat the Phillips Bears 22-15.

Tharptown ran for 270 yards and passed for just four yards in the win. Jeremy Vasquez led the charge with 12 carries for 132 yards and a touchdown. Dawson Higgins and Jackson Clement carried the ball 10 times each, Higgins for 97 yards and Clement for 60 yards.

Phillips struck first, scoring in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

Tharptown answered with a seven-yard touchdown by Clement. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the Wildcats trailing by one, 7-6.

Phillips dominated the second quarter, scoring on a safety and a touchdown to take a 15-6 lead into halftime.

Tharptown cut Phillips’ lead to one early in the third quarter on a 32-yard run by Higgins, making the score 15-14.

The Wildcats took the lead later in the quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by Vasquez, making the score 22-15.

Tharptown’s defense held strong in the fourth quarter to pick up the teams first win of the season.

The Wildcats will travel to Tanner Friday.
