County baseball sees solid week of action

    Vina

The Vina Red Devils defeated Waterloo recently 17-9. Tyler Renfrow got the win for the Red Devils. Renfrow pitched three innings and struck out six, allowing no hits. Justin Gravitt had a three-run triple that sparked a Vina rally after trailing 7-1 to the Cougars.

Vina picked up a win in game two of the series 4-0. James Barnes pitched a strong seven innings, striking out ten batters. Hayden Murray had two doubles and an RBI. Austin Childers also had an RBI hit. The wins improved the Red Devils’ record to 8-2.

    Red Bay

The Red Bay Tigers beat Sheffield Friday 11-1 in six innings. The Tigers scored five runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Troy Borden, an error, an RBI double by Chandler Allen and a two-run single by Houston McKinney.

McKinney racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Tigers.

Colby Knoblock racked up seven strikeouts in the the win. Knoblock allowed no earned runs, five hits and two walks over six innings.

Red Bay survived Sheffield’s surge and put up one run of their own in the third. The Tigers scored on an error.

The game was never in doubt after the fourth, as Red Bay scored one run on an RBI triple by Landen Burgett.

    Phil Campbell

The Phil Campbell Bobcats ten-runned the Sheffield Bulldogs last week, winning 11-1 over their 2A foe.  Chase Hutchins was the winning pitcher for the Bobcats, pitching all six innings and allowing only four hits and one run, striking out five. Joe Hardy went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored three runs. Hayden Copeland went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Peyton Thomas went 1-for-3 and scored two runs. Gage Roberson went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Colby Baker went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Nick Taylor went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Blake Jones added a hit. Jacob Anthony scored a run.

Phil Campbell was shut out by the Deshler Tigers 8-0. The Bobcats were only able to manage two hits in the game – both coming from Thomas.

Phil Campbell came from behind and defeated the Hackleburg Panthers in extra innings 5-4 on Saturday. The Bobcats trailed 4-2 going into the sixth inning. Phil Campbell tied the game in the top of the sixth with two runs.  In the top of the eighth Colby Baker singled and moved to second base on an error. Blake McAfee singled moving Baker to third base. Mike Wrona singled in the winning run.

In Varsity action, Payton Scott carried the Belgreen Bulldogs to a 17-5 victory over the Tharptown Wildcats with a strong game at the plate and on the hill.

Scott racked up two RBI on two hits for the Bulldogs, singling in the first and getting his first career home run in the second. He put together a nice outing. The Wildcats managed just one hit off of Scott, who allowed two earned runs, walked five and struck out five during his five innings of work.

Eight runs in the opening three innings allowed Belgreen to easily put away the Wildcats. A sacrifice fly by Ashlee Britton in the first, a passed ball, a wild pitch, an error and in the second a solo home run by Scott and a walk by Jake Taylor put some runs on the board early. The Wildcats were handled easily as the Bulldogs combined seven hitters for ten hits, 11 RBI and 15 runs scored.

The top of the first saw the Bulldogs take an early lead, 1-0. Scott kicked things off with a single. A stolen base then moved Scott from first to second.

The Tharptown Wildcats answered the Belgreen Bulldogs’ top inning with one run of their own in the first. Senior Max Nolen was able to score after hitting an in-the-park home run to centerfield.

The Bulldogs piled on three more runs in the top of the fourth. Nathaniel Rea singled, bringing home Britton to start the inning. That was followed up by Mason Donahoe’s single, bringing home Taylor and Rea.

Belgreen added six more runs in the top of the fifth. The inning got off to a hot start when Rea singled, plating Seth Taylor and Kenny Arnett. That was followed up by Kostner Bryant’s double,
