City to pursue traffic light at Lawrence Street, Highway 24

Rather than placing its stamp of approval on recent paving completed by Mid-South Paving, Inc. on Lawrence Street, the Russellville City Council is hoping squeeze just a little more out of the upgrade.

“When we first started the project, ALDOT included in the grant a stoplight,” Councilman David Palmer reminded the council. “We went through the process and actually did some engineering work to get that done, and the state came back, after all of that, decided not to (put in a stoplight).”

Palmer asked the council to table acceptance of the work to give him time to try to include the originally-planned traffic light, which is warranted based on traffic incidents at the intersection.

He plans to meet with the region engineer in regards to the action.

The council also:

–       approved a resolution for participation in the funding of the forensic lab at UNA.

–       appointed Councilmen Lanny Hubbard, Jamie Harris and Gary Cummings as voting delegates for the Alabama League Convention held May 14-17.

–       hired a patrol officer and promoted a sergeant in the Russellville Police Department.

–       approved in-progress and upcoming paving and striping additions in the city.

–       approved additional painting and maintenance for the tennis courts.

–       approved several requests for waived fees at the Canteen and A.W. Todd Centre.
