The Tharptown varsity girls basketball team took a big step towards claiming the program's first regular-season area title by upsetting No.-2 ranked Belgreen 59-57 Thursday..
Both teams entered the game with 4-0 records in area play.
The two squads met Friday night, but the game concluded too late to be included in today's edition of the Franklin County Times.
Tharptown would clinch the area title outright with a win.
A win by Belgreen would leave both teams with 4-1 records in area play and the winner would be determined by a tiebreaker.
Following Thursday's game, the Tharptown varsity boys team clinched the area title by squeaking past Belgreen 55-54.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-1 in area play while none of the other area teams will finish better than 3-3 in area play.
Russellville also won some key area games Thursday as the varsity boys and girls swept Athens.
With the win the varsity girls forced a tie for first place with Athens with a 5-1 area record and the winner of the area will be decided by a tiebreaker.
The varsity boys are out of the hunt for the area title because Muscle Shoals finished the season 6-0 in area play, but still have a shot at wrapping up the No.-2 seed in the area tournament.
The final seedings and schedules for the area tournaments will be finalized early next week.
