About that rate increase

By Staff
Nov. 4, 2001
Should Mississippi Power's proposed 9.5 percent rate increase be approved by the state's Public Service Commission? Company authorities will be making their case next week, just as opponents are lining up against it.
Any rate increase in a down economy is likely to be met with opposition, so Mississippi Power has an obligation to make a compelling case that rates should be increased. By the same token, opponents should show that the rate increase is unnecessary.
The PSC hearing in Jackson will begin just after the Legislature leaves town, having presumably dealt with redistricting. At the very least, the PSC hearing will offer a news diversion from anthrax and terrorism. Maybe this is the sort of thing President Bush meant when he said the country should get back to normal.
