Local clubs serve community
She Says
Local clubs wrapped up the 2024 year supporting food insecurity, service projects in the community and Christmas dinners.
The GFWC Book Lovers Study Club participated in the GFWC National Day of Service (NDS) project. The GFWC National Day of Service is an annual community service program undertaken at the international, national, state and grassroots levels to help others.
Book Lovers coordinated two can drives, collecting more than 300 cans total, at Russellville First Baptist Church and Russellville First Methodist Church. North Highlands Church of Christ distributed 245 food items to the unhoused people in our area.
The 2024 General Federation of Women’s Club National Day of Service focuses on the pressing issues of food insecurity and hunger in communities across the United States and internationally. This is the second consecutive year for this project. The GFWC is pleased to report the following results which doubled from last year.
Approximately 721 of the 1,076 participating collected 221,142 pounds of nonperishable food; $242,731 in monetary donations for food pantries and school feeding programs and prepared 69,660 meals.
“I am immensely proud of every GFWC member who came together with such dedication and enthusiasm to raise awareness in the community to collect nonperishable food items, and prepare nourishing meals for those facing hardship,” said Suellen B. Brazil, GFWC International President.
The Franklin County Education Retirees Association supports the Russellville Coalition for the Homeless. Members donate monthly to the Russellville Coalition for the Homeless by providing items including nonperishable food, toiletries, bottled water and more. FCERA also donated $100 to the North Alabama Food Bank. Heather Medlin, daughter of Joe Tucker and the late Shelia Tucker, provided entertainment. She is a junior at the University of North Alabama majoring in music education. She performed several Christmas songs. Each member enjoyed a Christmas potluck luncheon.
Cultura Garden Club sprinkled a bit of Christmas spirit stardust on the residents of the Country Cottage Assisted Living by assisting them to make a small arrangement for their room. Supplies including coffee mugs, flowers and greenery were supplied. Brenda Oliver demonstrated how to make the arrangements. Each resident participating received holiday treats. Following this holiday project for the residents, Cultura members met at the home of Brenda Oliver for a Christmas dinner and “Dirty Santa Gift Exchange.”
