Russellville baseball athlete signs with Huntingdon College

Russellville High School 2024 graduate Michael Scofield signed with Huntingdon College to continue his academic and baseball career during a celebration at the RHS field house July 16.

Scofield was the starting catcher for the Golden Tigers in this year’s season and helped lead the team to an area title and an AHSAA Class 5A third-round playoff appearance. During his senior year, he caught 180 innings and had almost 1,000 chances on defense and made only two errors. The 2024 season was the first for Scofield as the full-time starting catcher on the varsity level.

During his time on the varsity squad at RHS, Scofield saw action as an outfielder before sliding in behind the plate at the catcher position. A multi-sport athlete, he was also a valuable member of the Russellville football team as a defensive back and then as a wide receiver.

“He is certainly a special kid to all of us, not just as a player but who he is as a person,” Russellville head coach Jess Smith said of Scofield. “I’m extremely proud for Michael to get this opportunity to play at the next level.”

Oftentimes, the catcher position is one of leadership on the baseball team and that was the case for Scofield at RHS. “I never saw Michael have a bad day this year,” Smith shared. “I never saw Michael be a bad teammate. He brought the same energy level to practice as he did to games.”

Huntingdon is located in Montgomery and is a member of NCAA Division III. The Hawks play in the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) and are led by head coach D.J. Conville.

“This means everything to me,” Scofield said at the signing party. “Having all my friends and family out here today just to come and watch me sign a sheet of paper to go play at the next level means a lot to me. It just shows how much support that everybody in the community of Russellville has for their athletes.” Scofield’s parents are Chris Scofield and Mary Scofield.
