DKG members hold special meeting, study Iceland

Delta Kappa Gamma Alpha Upsilon met March 4 at the First Baptist Church in Phil Campbell.  The program featured the DKG Worldwide Sisterhood theme “Putting the Pieces Together in Iceland.”

Barbara Cain, Judy Evett, Sandra Guinn, Karen Townsend, Beverly Donaldson and Tilda Sumeral served as hostesses. They prepared food representing Iceland, including chocolate cake, gingersnap cookies, cheese on rye bread and coffee. Cain shared Icelandic memorabilia including books from Iceland and information relating to her daughter’s experience of hosting a student teacher from Iceland.

Iceland, a Nordic island nation, is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Massive glaciers are protected in Vatnajökull and Snæfellsjökull national parks. Most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, which runs on geothermal power and is home to the National and Saga museums that trace Iceland’s Viking history. Iceland is popular for tourists because of its abundant natural beauty, ultra-friendly people and a peaceful nation that has fresh and clean air.

In the absence of the group’s president, Cheri McCain, Debbie Nale presided over the meeting. She presented the president’s report, holding roll call by each member naming her favorite spring flower.

The Nominations Committee presented its report of new officers, and members voted on it. The DKG Alpha Upsilon officers for the 2024-2026 administration are Beverly Donaldson, president; Donna Bolton, vice-president; Debbie Beason, secretary; Debbie Nale, treasurer; and Cheri McCain, parliamentary advisor.

Business session discussion included the Delta Kappa Gamma Founders Day banquet, planned for May 6, at the Russellville North Highlands Church of Christ. Each member received committee assignments, consisting of invitations, welcome, program, registrar/name tags, door greeters, caterer, servers, food committee, table decorations/head table setup, table favors, flowers/centerpiece, entertainment and clean-up.

Members were asked to submit names for membership into DKG Alpha Upsilon at the March meeting. New members’ names, phone number, address, email address and information about their teaching career, organization memberships and other pertinent information to share about the prospective members were presented at the meeting.  These new members will be voted on at the April meeting, and the chapter officers will present an orientation a the May meeting and banquet.

Alpha Upsilon members that attended the DKG Leadership Day meeting gave a report and reviewed changes made by the By-Laws Committee. The meeting closed with the reading of the DKG Beta State Collect.
